Thought for November

Categories: Daniel, MatthewTags: 1.6 min read

Childhood memories often become more vivid as we grow older with sensory experiences reminding us of times gone by. The smoky smell of bonfires stirs my thoughts as I recall Bonfire Night celebrations. Born and brought up near Lewes, Sussex, I was taken each year to watch a noisy procession marching along the streets of that ancient town. I was often fearful of the blazing torches, the exploding fire crackers and the ominous chant of the marchers as they made their way to a huge bonfire.

‘Remember, remember!
The fifth of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot! ‘

Though the reason for Guy Fawkes and his associates wanting to blow up the king and parliament has long been forgotten, political differences and terrorist activities still exist all over the world. Brexit has caused much anxiety in families and businesses across the UK and many people fear for the future.

The Bible tells us that God has promised He will send Jesus back to the earth to show mankind how to live in peace and harmony. As we wait for that time we have the example of the life of Jesus to follow. He gave us two commandments. The first was to ‘love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ (Matthew 22 v 37 -39). If we read about the life of Jesus and his teachings in the New Testament, and try to follow them, we can be part of God’s purpose with the earth.

Until the time when Jesus returns we need to understand, like Daniel, that ‘the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of people’ (Daniel 4 v 17).
