Thought for January 2016

As I sit at my desk looking up the slope of the hill, I can see a row of houses far away, right on the crest of the ridge. In the back garden of one of those houses is what looks like a very smart flag-pole which used to fly the Union Jack flag. A short while ago I noticed that the Union flag had been replaced by one of Scotland, and that has flown in the gales and breezes ever since. It is curious how flags demonstrate our allegiance to a country or a cause. Carried into battle, hanging over buildings of state. Even showing whether the British Monarch is at home. Many flags or banners are carried or waved during demonstrations, some of which are tolerated and others bloodily put down. All however, showing allegiance to something or someone.

So it was interesting to come across another reference to banners when I was looking through the book of Psalms, it was in Psalm 20 and I read the group of verses starting at verse 5, the words I read were “We will rejoice in your salvation and in the name of our God we will set up our banners, May the Lord fulfill all your petitions. Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven With the saving strength of His right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the LORD our God. They have bowed down and fallen; But we have risen and stand upright.”
