September – Put Your Trust in the Lord

Categories: PsalmsTags: 1.3 min read

Psalm 118 v 8, popularly believed to be the middle verse of the bible, tells us “It is better to trust in the Lord than to depend on human leaders.”

Personally, I find this comforting at a time when the immorality and ineptitude of so many influential leaders is deeply troubling. Yet, as humans, we look to good leaders to guide us, support us, take responsibility, and make decisions on our behalf. We often gravitate towards those we respect as leaders with integrity; those that share our values, or that we connect with on a more personal level. Surely there are leaders that we can trust?

Psalm 146 v 3 goes on to say: “Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save.” The message delivered then, is as real to us now. Even kings and princes, presidents and prime ministers, cannot save themselves or us, from the inevitable. Good or bad, honourable or corrupt, influential or otherwise; all humans are inconstant and all will pass away. Confidence in human leaders has no place to flourish, and trust has no refuge.

And so, whether or not Psalm 118 v 8 is the middle verse of the bible, it has a message that is central to our lives and to our futures. Only God is constant, unchangeable, the provider of all things. By placing our trust in Him; even in the midst of this troubled and chaotic world we can find comfort and reassurance, for He alone can lead us to salvation and peace eternal.

“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.” – Psalm 62 v 1
