January – Going into the New Year

Categories: Uncategorized2.7 min read

As we are at the beginning of a new year I thought it would be good to reflect on the old year and how we go forward into the new.

What do we reflect on when looking back at the last year? I expect many of us will see a mixture of achievements and regrets. Perhaps there were lost opportunities or things we didn’t do that we would have liked to have done (or should have done). Maybe we said things that we wish we hadn’t or on the other hand we may have achieved things that you never thought possible. Did you feel that God was leading you or were you going your own way?

We can’t change the past but we can reflect on it and learn. That year has gone never to return. Just as new every morning is the love of God in giving us another day of life to serve Him. So each day is a new opportunity for us to go forward doing the things He wants us to. In the parable of the sower the seed withered when it was choked by weeds or lacked water and depth of soil and we are taught to make our lives like good soil so that the seeds of God’s Word will grow.

What has the new year got in store for you? Do you look forward in fear? It has been said “We can’t fear the past. Fear is a future thing and since the future’s all in our head fear must be a head thing”. We see the News and the things happening in the Middle East and for many Christadelphians we find that some days we rejoice because we feel the return of the Lord is near but other days we may fear what we or our families might have to go through before that time comes.

In Genesis we can read about the faith of Abel, Enoch, Noah and Abraham and these are all in Hebrews 11 (a good Chapter of the Bible to read about faith). Faith is not an easy thing but the more convinced we are of the reality of an all-good, all-powerful God, the more our trust will grow and the less we will be overwhelmed by doubts and temptations. So a good thing to start with is faith.

Many of the Psalms are about guidance such as Psalm 5 v8. In Psalm 23 we see that life is not all by the still waters and David knows that God is with him even in the fearful times.

Jesus refers to himself as the Good Shepard (John 10 v 1-5), he is leading us if we listen to his voice.

Matthew 11 v 23-30 tells us more about how we should lead our lives. Oh dear, now we could be back to worrying again but Jesus says “do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” which is good advice for everyone.

So how do we face the coming year? With faith in God, following Jesus our Good Shepherd and taking one day at a time….. Happy New Year everyone!
