Genesis: Chapter 5

Categories: GenesisTags: 2.7 min read

We also talked about the lifespan of the first descendants of Adam. It was interesting to see that Adam lived for 930 years and saw the birth of Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah and Lamech. Adam also saw many of his descendants choosing to follow their own way rather than the way of God.

We continued our reading and discussion of Genesis by looking at Chapter 5. We were reminded in Genesis 5:1-2 that God created mankind in his own likeness and blessed them with the mental capacity and ability to choose to follow His way or their own way.

Genesis 5:3 – 4 shows us that even though the aging process was stretched out (Adam lived for 930 years), because of Adam and Eve’s disobedience both themselves, and all the generations that followed were affected by the law of sin and death.

We talked about the fact that Genesis 5 is the written account of Adam’s family tree and emphasises the continuing mortality of human nature. Although all those who lived prior to Abraham lived for much longer nevertheless we are reminded of the mortality of each generation by the repeated phrase ‘and then he died.’ It was suggested that everyone lived longer because God provided guidance and suitable conditions for living in a healthy way. It was only when mankind grew further away from God’s guidance that their lives became shortened.

As we read the chapter we recognised that the writing of genealogies had a set form. Genesis 5:3 – 8 shows that, although Adam was created in the likeness of God, his son Seth was born in Adam’s image. He therefore inherited his father’s sinful nature as did future generations from their fathers.

We talked about the meanings of the names mentioned in Genesis 5 and how the purpose of God was revealed through these names.

  • Adam: Man (Genesis 5:2). Adam was the father of mankind.
  • Seth: Appointed – as a substitute for Abel (Genesis 5:6). When he was born Eve said ‘For God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.’ (Genesis 4:25).
  • Enos: Misery – mortal, frail (Genesis 5:7). Enos was Seth’s son and during his lifetime mankind began to move further away from following God’s way.
  • Cainan: sorrow – lamenting (Genesis 5:9). The sins of mankind caused great sorrow on the earth.
  • Mahalaleel: Praise of God (Genesis 5:12). The need to praise God for all his blessings was recognised.
  • Jared: to descend (Genesis 5:16).
  • Enoch: Dedicated one (Genesis 5:18) ‘Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.’ We are reminded that Enoch walked before God in obedience and was taken away from the wickedness of mankind.
  • Methuselah: His death shall send forth (Genesis 5:21) According to the genealogy Methuselah lived until the year of the flood and died just before it happened.
  • Lamech: Despairing, weary (Genesis 5:25)
  • Noah: comfort, rest (Genesis 5:29). Lamech called his son Noah because he understood that Noah would be a righteous man and bring comfort to them.
