Thought for January 17
I can’t help feeling sorry for the people who are responsible for governing any country in Europe.
So much has happened in the last few years to rock the political boat, with Banks on the edge of collapse, having to be rescued. Small newly added countries being overwhelmed by either their own enthusiastic spending or just the sheer enormity of the playing field that they have entered. The curious thing is that whilst all this is going on, we the people in the street just get on with our lives: occasionally disturbed by Media headlines with terrifying pictures of starving and desperate people caught up in the disaster of war. Disturbing for us to behold but what can we as individuals do? Even attempts at intervention by one nation or another so often just make things worse.
We are so confident, us human beings, that we can manage our own affairs; yet I am saddened by seeing just how often any attempt at providing stable and far sighted government is constantly being undermined by other men and women of power who seek only to destroy. Not just here in the UK but in many other countries.
As I have discovered on many other occasions when writing these thoughts down, it is amazing how many times I have come across the answer to my worries when leafing through my Bible.
It sounds fantastic that such an ancient book could have relevance to our lives today but believe me it can and it does. I will show you what I found that really encouraged me, it was in the book of Daniel and in the second chapter and is part of the explanation of a dream mapping out the future for a powerful eastern King. These are the words:-
“And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms and it shall stand for ever”.
Just a few words further on was another reassuring statement:-
“The great God has made known to the King what shall come to pass hereafter; and the dream is certain and the interpretation of it sure”.
I know that in the history of mankind, what was promised has not yet happened; and because I am learning to trust what the Bible says, I am certain that it will happen.
